Lunch-time sketching

3 quick sketches done at lunch -- for practice

(30 min total for all 3)

..done using Art Rage

Digital>Traditional process

Lately, I've been exploring a process of using my digital art to 'ideate' for the purpose of turning these into traditional paintings. I have done this for landscapes and now I'm working on a series of abstracts that combine figurative elements.

A few nights ago, I couldn't sleep.. got up at 11:30pm and worked on a digital painting/idea (in the attached image) until 2am. Over the weekend, I started on the traditional painting - here is a 'sneak peek' below that shows the early process.. at this point, I've only spent 30 minutes on this -- doing a quick Acrylic wash/under painting. More updates to come!

Here is a link to a video capture that I did for this -- showing my process. (the original painting took 70 min to complete.. this video is sped up %500 and plays for 12 min)

Verve Painter -- first painting (digital still life study)

This was a study (my first actual painting using Verve Painter). My goal here was to learn the software and use a traditional painting as a study/reference. I chose this painting by Carol Marine, (whom I admire as an artist -- check out her work!) -- I purchased this painting from her and it sits on my desk next to me -- so I thought, "why not study this artwork?" My goal was not to perfectly copy it.. but rather learn the software and control the paint -- along with studying how she applied her brush strokes. It was a fun exercise -- and I LOVE the software!.. it does an amazing job on mimicking the 'digital impasto' look that I am drawn to for my traditional paintings and I can't wait to experiment more with this!

WIP - Fall #1 (update 2)

..what I've been doing lately-- is using my digital art paintings as 'studies' (and reference art) for creating the traditional paintings on canvas. Here you can see a Fall painting that I created using Art Rage and I'm in the process of creating that on canvas, using Oil Pastels.

Not only does this give me a prior working knowledge of the subject matter, but I've already worked out the color/composition and I'm familiar with the brush strokes and other details.

'Self portrait with orange baseball hat'

Here is an update on an older painting I did -- i wanted to return to this and fix some issues with color, etc.. and also wanted to add a background color/texture to it (old one was pure white background)

I'm happier with this one turned out.. :)

McMahon

Recently, I was in the mood to work on some character related art (portraits, etc) -- and take a small break from landscapes (which have been my sole focus the past 6-8 months)

This was a piece that I created a few years ago.. but always bothered me and I wanted to someday return to working on. So, I resurrected this and spent a few days reworking areas -- with re-painting certain areas to adjusted contrast/saturation/hue of various areas (background, face, etc)

I also decided to make the beard/shirt area read as a solid, dark graphic..

Here is the new artwork:
